So the question a friend asked, "Are you beating S&P" and usually I respond by saying - "How is that even a Goal"...so the response is - "Because they say, 90% of the traders do not beat S&P"...to that I respond, "Says who?"...Well...everyone says that, there are articles written, Even Buffet said it, to that I respond, "Ok, why is Buffet, owning stocks and not S&P then?"...and articles are written for everything, on what time frame we are talking about? are we talking about traders or investors? So, Here is my Goal...First I need to reach to 1 million dollars invested in the individual stocks...If I have time - I would take 10 years to build it...Why 10 years? Because then the stocks that I am going to keep in my portfolio have went through multiple cycles of up and down....It will give me better visibility of that particular company, if I know them for a longer period of time. I will have more confidence in them whether to own it for the life time or not. Once that Portfolio is build ...for a 1 million dollar (with infinite growth potential)...I dont want to own Verizon or Pfizer or Microsoft or Apple ...I want to own "NEXT BIG THING".....but I also dont want to own something, which wont even last 2 years in the market...that is why important to build that position over a longer period of time. Once it is build...I can measure my performance of that portfolio with S&P (on a little longer time frame), so if S&P gets doubled after that in say 7 years....that 1 million would have given 2....my Portfolio should give minimum of 4...even 5...IF not, I have failed. but even that is not a goal. Here is the GOAL ....7 years after that when S&P would have doubled again and given 4 million (of that 1 million in 14 years)...My portfolio should give 15 or 20 million dollars...If not, I fail. and that is also not the GOAL. Unfortunately, I am 47...for that to happen I need to live till 72 (extremely unlikely)...hence I am running around to get to that million as fast as possible...because I started late. Assuming I live till 72...and this portfolio has age of 25....if it has less return then S&P 500, I will accept the defeat gracefully.
